ST. LOUIS, MO / ACCESS Newswire / August 14, 2026 / Legal matters can be stressful, but understanding them should not be. According to William Catlett attorney and experienced legal advocate, clear communication is one of the most important parts of effective legal representation because clients make better decisions when they understand both the process and their options.
His comments align with findings from The Public Speaks: An Empirical Study of Legal Communication, which surveyed 376 members of the public about legal writing and attorney communication. The study found that respondents chose plain-language legal writing over traditional legal language about 80% of the time, while more than seven in ten said they had struggled to understand an attorney at some point.
“For me, being honest and transparent with every client has always been essential,” Catlett says. “I never want someone to feel like they’re being talked over. Clients deserve to understand the process, the options available to them and the likely outcomes.”
Licensed to practise law in Missouri, Illinois and Kansas, Catlett represents clients in family law, bankruptcy, probate, guardianships, criminal defence, mental illness proceedings and real estate matters. While the legal issues vary, his approach remains consistent: explain the law in practical terms so clients can make informed decisions with confidence.
Throughout his career, Catlett has seen how uncertainty often adds to the stress people experience when facing legal challenges. Whether someone is navigating a divorce, considering bankruptcy, or dealing with a guardianship matter, he believes understanding the process allows clients to participate more effectively in their own case.
“People come to an attorney looking for guidance,” Catlett says. “That starts with communication. If a client understands what’s happening and why, they’re in a much stronger position to make good decisions.”
Catlett’s commitment to clear communication extends beyond representing clients. For years, he has served as a Court Testimonial Trainer for resident physicians at major St. Louis hospitals, helping medical professionals prepare to provide clear, effective testimony during court proceedings. He has also represented individuals in involuntary commitment and guardianship proceedings, where careful communication and a thorough understanding of legal rights are especially important.
As legal matters continue to grow more complex, Catlett believes attorneys have an even greater responsibility to make the law more accessible rather than more intimidating.
“The legal system is already complicated,” Catlett says. “My responsibility is to help clients understand it, protect their rights and guide them toward the best possible outcome.”
